• Successful public transport is essential to reducing urban greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution and congestion, and to providing access to jobs, education, and other services and amenities. Too often, however, public transport systems fail to meet the needs of everyone due to physical access issues, cost, routes served, safety or other factors. In particular, public transport systems commonly neglect the needs of women, the elderly, those with mobility impairments, people travelling with young children, people on low incomes and those who are socially excluded.1 By addressing gaps and access challenges, cities can increase public transport ridership and maximise associated social, economic and environmental benefits.
